Neuromuscular Disorders

Overview

Neuromuscular disorders generally affect the nerves that take control over voluntary muscles and the nerves that send/communicate sensory information back to the brain. Neurons (nerve cells) receive and send electrical messages to and from the body to help control the voluntary muscles. When the neurons die or become unhealthy, the communication between the nervous system and muscles breaks down. Consequently, muscles weaken and waste away.

In such cases, it is extremely difficult for the patient to control movement in the affected area, for instance arms or legs. This condition may tend to be progressive in nature and leads to muscle weakness and fatigue. Neuromuscular disorders are generally caused by genetic reasons or due to abnormal immune response, inflammation and tumor. At times there is no known cause for the onset of this condition. Muscular dystrophies, peripheral motor neuron diseases and myopathies are few conditions caused by neuromuscular disorder.

Signs and Symptoms of neuromuscular disorder include:

  • Muscle weakness that can lead to twitching, cramps, aches and pains
  • Muscle loss
  • Movement issues
  • Balance problems
  • Numbness, tingling or painful sensations
  • Droopy eyelids
  • Double vision
  • Trouble with swallowing or Trouble breathing
